The United States is raking in the medals at the Paris Games and, with little signs of this slowing down, Team USA are currently projected to break a 40-year record. Gracenote, a sports data business that analyzes performance metrics, has predicted that Team USA will secure an astonishing 128 medals. If this projection holds true, it would not only position the United States at the top of the medal count but also mark the highest tally for Team USA since the 1984 Los Angeles Games, where they won a total of 174 medals.
According to the latest data, the anticipated medal distribution includes 42 gold, 42 silver, and 44 bronze medals. This impressive forecast puts Team USA significantly ahead of competitors, with Gracenote estimating that China will finish second with 97 medals and France, the host nation, in third place with 67 medals.
As of now, the U.S. boasts the largest delegation at the Games, comprising 594 athletes. Currently, Team USA ranks second in the medal table, trailing behind China in the count of gold medals. Notably, the American athletes have excelled particularly in athletics, achieving remarkable victories that further bolster the nation's standing in the ongoing competition.
As of August 9, Team USA has already secured 104 medals, including 30 golds. With such momentum, the possibility of breaking the 40-year record looks increasingly likely. At the 1984 Games, the U.S. achieved 83 golds, 61 silvers, and 30 bronzes, largely due to the absence of fierce competition from the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc countries, who boycotted the event in retaliation for the American boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
This year’s projected medal haul is even more impressive, given that only two nations—Russia and Belarus—are not participating due to bans from the International Olympic Committee following the war in Ukraine. However, individual athletes from these nations can still compete as 'Individual Neutral Athletes' under strict regulations.
If the U.S. finishes with the most medals, it would mark the eighth consecutive time they have topped the medal count, further establishing their dominance in Olympic history, where they have previously won the most medals at a Summer Olympics 18 times. The record for the most Olympic medals ever won by the U.S. is 239, achieved during the 1904 St. Louis Games, which notably featured few elite athletes from outside North America.
As the Games progress, all eyes are on Team USA. With each medal won, they inch closer to setting a new benchmark in Olympic history. This year’s achievements are a testament to the athletes' hard work and dedication, and it will be exciting to see how the competition unfolds as they strive to maintain their legacy.
