Financial stability, crime rates, and quality healthcare can all factor into a happy life for Americans. Yet, despite its strengths in many areas, the United States continues to struggle in global happiness rankings. According to the latest World Happiness Report—a collaboration among Gallup, the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre, and the United Nations—the U.S. has dropped eight spots to 23rd place in the global rankings between 2023 and 2024. This is particularly significant as it marks the first time in the report's 12-year history that the country has slipped outside the top 20.
Interestingly, the top 10 happiest countries remain predominantly European, with Finland taking the number one spot, followed closely by Israel and Australia. A recent study from Columbia Business School has attempted to quantify the economic impact of unhappiness in the U.S., revealing that mental illness costs the economy approximately $282 billion each year. This economic toll raises questions about how different states are faring regarding happiness, as the average American's joy seems to be in decline.
To explore this further, the World Population Review evaluated 31 metrics—including working hours, job security, and rates of adult depression—to create a weighted overall happiness score for each U.S. state. According to their findings, Hawaii emerges as the top contender with a happiness score of 66.3, excelling in both emotional and physical well-being. Hawaii also boasts the highest average life expectancy at 80.7 years, and according to the Centers for Disease Control, it has the lowest adult depression rate at 12.7%, significantly lower than the national median of 19.9%.
In stark contrast, West Virginia sits at the bottom of the happiness rankings with a score of 33.83. Despite its natural beauty and rich culture, the state struggles with emotional and physical well-being, ranking last in these areas. Alarmingly, over a quarter of West Virginians (27.5%) have received a diagnosis of adult depression, showcasing a stark divide in happiness across the country.
As we delve deeper into the factors influencing happiness in America, it becomes crucial to understand both the positive and negative aspects that contribute to this complex emotion. By examining the differences across states, we can better appreciate what makes some regions thrive while others struggle.
