While Social Security recipients are used to receiving their monthly benefit check, some beneficiaries will be surprised to find they could receive two payments in August. This exciting news is specifically geared towards Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients, ensuring that they receive their benefits on time. The checks will be distributed on August 1 and August 30, with the second check actually meant for September. This early payment is due to September 1 falling on a weekend, ensuring no delays for those who rely on these funds.
In a 2022 blog post, the Social Security Administration stated, “We do this to avoid putting you at a financial disadvantage and make sure that you don’t have to wait beyond the first of the month to get your payment.” It’s important to clarify that this does not mean beneficiaries are receiving duplicate payments; there is no need to contact the administration regarding this second payment.
Occasionally, SSI recipients may receive more than one payment in a month, depending on how the dates fall. However, this double payment means that there will not be another payment in September. Beneficiaries can look forward to the next SSI check being released on October 1 for the month of October.
It's crucial to note that regular Social Security benefits will not be impacted during August. SSI payments are designated for adults and children living with disabilities or blindness, as well as individuals aged 65 and older. As of June, nearly 7.4 million individuals received these monthly benefits.
The Future of Social Security
Seniors and those living with disabilities who depend on Social Security checks are increasingly worried as analysts raise alarms about the looming funding crisis. Current estimates predict that the retirement and disability safety net program may become insolvent by the mid-2030s, potentially leaving seniors without full payments.
In an effort to address these concerns, lawmakers and economists have proposed various policy changes. However, many of these suggestions, such as raising the retirement age or reducing benefit amounts, have not gained widespread approval among the public.
Despite adjustments for inflation through cost-of-living increases, many seniors continue to express dissatisfaction with the annual benefits boost. For instance, in 2023, recipients experienced a check increase of up to 8.7 percent, but the adjustment for 2024 dropped to just 3.2 percent, resulting in only about a $50 increase for most beneficiaries.
As Alex Beene, a financial literacy instructor from Tennessee, points out, “You can sense the frustration among seniors when you walk into a grocery store.” Everyday items have seen significant price increases due to inflation, which many seniors were unprepared for during retirement. In a survey by the Senior Citizens' League, nearly all respondents reported that their household expenses rose by more than $59 monthly in 2023, with many indicating a spike of over $185.
The financial strain on seniors is substantial, especially since approximately 25 million Americans over the age of 60 live at or below 250 percent of the federal poverty line, according to the National Council on Aging. “The increases are there, but there’s a general feeling of them not being substantial enough, and it’s easy to see why,” Beene added.
