National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby on Wednesday discussed the recent decision by the United States to provide 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. This significant move comes as Ukraine continues to face numerous challenges in its ongoing conflict with Russia. As the situation unfolds, it is crucial to understand not only the implications of this military assistance but also the logistical hurdles that may arise in its execution.
During a press conference, Kirby highlighted important issues that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's military forces might encounter with the Abrams tanks, particularly the critical matter of fueling these battle vehicles. The Abrams tanks are powered by a "gas turbine engine which needs jet fuel," he explained. Ensuring that the necessary fuel supply chain is available to Ukraine will be essential for the effective operation of these tanks.
John Spencer, a retired U.S. Army major and chair of Urban Warfare Studies at the Madison Policy Forum, echoed Kirby's concerns, emphasizing that fueling the tanks will indeed be a challenge for Ukraine. While the M1 engine can utilize various fuel types, Spencer recalled that he primarily operated them with jet fuel, indicating the specific requirements that Ukraine will need to meet to harness this military aid effectively.
Spencer pointed out that even if Ukraine possesses other tanks that can operate on diesel, they will still face significant challenges related to fuel availability. "Fuel in general in Ukraine is an issue, even if it’s just diesel," he remarked, recalling his observation of long lines at gas stations during his visit in July. The ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine's infrastructure have further complicated the fuel supply situation, making the task of maintaining effective military operations more daunting.
William Reno, a prominent political science professor at Northwestern University, weighed in on the discussion by noting that the Abrams can also run on JP-8, a commonly used kerosene by the U.S. military and NATO. This detail suggests that while accessing the fuel might not be impossible, the Abrams' reputation as a "fuel hog" presents a significant drawback. Reno emphasized that the vehicle's turbine runs continuously after ignition, which results in high fuel consumption—a tradeoff for its speed and acceleration capabilities.
