After a shooter opened fire in an Iowa high school on Thursday, some on social media have claimed that the perpetrator, Dylan Butler, was transgender. This horrific event resulted in the loss of one sixth-grade student and left three other students along with a school administrator injured. The incident occurred at around 7:30 a.m. local time, just before classes began at Perry High School, Iowa. Tragically, the shooter, identified as 17-year-old Butler, was found dead at the scene due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The gender identity of Butler has yet to be confirmed, but various right-wing figures have taken to social media to assert that Butler identified as transgender. However, no substantial evidence supports this claim, nor the notion that transgender individuals are more likely to engage in violent acts. This situation contributes to a broader narrative where similar allegations have quickly circulated online, often without factual backing.
Right-wing blogger Ian Miles Cheong also contributed to the discourse, alleging on X (formerly Twitter) that Butler had participated in discussions on transgender forums using the username "Dylanpickle1996." This claim reflects a growing trend on social media where individuals seek to link violence with specific gender identities, often leading to misinformation and stigma against transgender communities.
In the aftermath, Donald Trump Jr. took to social media to question whether there is a more violent group than "radicalized trans activists," claiming that their population's size does not correlate with their alleged violent acts. Such statements, however, typically lack empirical support and perpetuate harmful stereotypes that unfairly target marginalized communities.
The anti-LGBTQ+ account, Libs of TikTok, also posted about the shooter, suggesting that they were gender fluid. This post included a screengrab of a TikTok that allegedly was shared by Butler, featuring graffiti that reads, "Love your trans kids." The implications of this narrative are significant, as it attempts to frame transgender individuals as inherently dangerous.
Another user, Collin Rugg, shared supposed screenshots from social media accounts attributed to Butler, indicating that the shooter identified with the pronouns "he/they" and used hashtags such as "#genderfluid." These assertions, however, remain unverified, and the propagation of such claims without substantiation exacerbates the issue of misinformation.
Experts have noted that linking violent actions to gender identity is not only misleading but also dangerous. The Violence Project, which tracks mass shootings, highlights that 97% of mass public shooters are male, and the involvement of transgender individuals in such incidents is exceedingly rare. The conversation around this shooting must consider the broader context of gun violence in America rather than focusing on the shooter's gender identity.
As the investigation continues, it is crucial to await verified information from law enforcement before drawing conclusions about the shooter's motivations or identity. Meanwhile, discussions surrounding the incident should prioritize facts over speculation to prevent further stigmatization of already marginalized groups.
