Michigan Lawmakers Propose Bill To Eliminate Daylight Saving Time

Michigan lawmakers are considering a new bill to eliminate Daylight Saving Time (DST) in the state, potentially allowing residents to stop changing their clocks twice a year. This proposed legislation, a 2023 Senate Bill currently in committee, aims to keep Michigan on a single standard time year-round. This change could significantly affect over 10 million residents of the state.

As most Americans prepare to turn their clocks back one hour this Sunday at 2 a.m. for daylight saving time, Michigan may follow in the footsteps of Arizona and Hawaii—two states that already do not observe DST. Arizona and Hawaii chose not to adopt DST back in the 1960s, shortly after the Uniformed Time Act of 1966 was enacted. This act provides the option for states to opt-out of observing DST and remain on standard time, but it does not permit states to remain on daylight saving time indefinitely. While federal law allows states to reject DST, it does not permit states to adopt permanent DST without Congressional approval.

Michigan has previously attempted to pass legislation to remain on daylight saving time year-round, pending the repeal of federal rules surrounding DST. However, these efforts have yet to succeed. As it currently stands, Michigan's neighboring states still observe DST, which may complicate scheduling and transportation due to time zone differences.

A bill proposing to move Michigan to year-round daylight saving time passed the House in 2021 but was contingent upon neighboring states Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, and Pennsylvania also making the switch.
