Lisa Ling is a First-Generation American
Lisa Ling is proud to be a Chinese American, but that wasn't always the case due to her family's financial struggles during her childhood. Her mother, Mary Mei-yan, immigrated to the United States from Taiwan, while her father, Chung Teh "Douglas" Ling, came from China. After their divorce when Lisa was just seven, she and her sister were raised by their father in northern California.
Ling recognized her desire to be on television early on, stating that the TV was her babysitter. Her father was often busy working, leaving her and her sister to find solace in television. Growing up in a financially constrained environment, she dreamed of a better life through a career in media.
Despite coming from a broken home, Lisa has created a loving family environment for her children, Jett Ling Song and Ray Ling Song, with her husband, oncologist Paul Song, whom she married in 2007.
Investigative Reporting Remains Lisa Ling's First Love
Lisa Ling's This Is Life series showcases her dedication to in-depth storytelling. She began her journey in journalism at the age of sixteen, hosting a nationally syndicated show called Scratch. This opportunity opened doors for her, allowing her to delve into the world of television.
At eighteen, she landed a job at Channel One News, which transformed her career. This platform gave her the chance to travel and experience diverse cultures, shifting her focus from merely wanting to be on TV to a deeper desire to communicate compelling stories to an American audience.
However, co-hosting The View from 1999 to 2002, while a significant breakthrough, pulled her away from the field reporting she cherished. Ling's departure from The View was driven by her longing to return to on-the-ground journalism, which led her to contribute to National Geographic Explorer in 2003.
