Everyone loves sunny days. Soaking up the sun with your best pals, drinking your favourite lemonade, and exploring new things in Manitoba sounds like the best summer ever, doesn’t it? But what can you do on a rainy day? Here are 11 of the best things you and your friends can do on gloomy days like today.
1. Learn something new at a museum
There’s no shortage of museums in Manitoba. They’re perfect for rainy days. Depending on what really interests you, you could hop on a bus or drive to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. It’s probably one of the most iconic buildings in Manitoba. The best part is that you can go again and again, always finding something new. You could also go to the Manitoba Museum, which is great if you’re interested in Manitoban history, science, or star gazing!
2. Take a spa day
Rainy days are an excuse to do something you might not have time to otherwise. With the sun hiding away, you might as well relax and go to a spa. A good massage or a mud bath is the perfect thing to prepare you for the upcoming week. There is always going to be an indoor spa for you and your friends to go to around the city, like the Ten Spa at Fort Garry Hotel or the Academy Massage Therapist.
3. Go gallery hopping
Winnipeg is full of a variety of cool art galleries! Hopping around galleries like Mayberry Fine Art, the Graffiti Gallery, or even the Winnipeg Art Gallery can be really interesting and eye opening. Learning the history and the story behind different art pieces is often surprisingly cool and interesting. Also, a lot of these art galleries have workshops. So, rather than looking at some art, you can create your own!
4. Find something fun to eat
If there’s one thing we all love, its food. Some may like sweet foods, while others may like salty foods, but everyone likes food. And the nice thing about being alive is that food is necessary, which gives you an excuse to eat whenever and whatever no matter what the weather is like. Rain? That can’t stop our desire for food, and the best thing about it is that if you have nothing better to do, why not try out a new restaurant that you’ve seen and have been tempted by but haven’t had the time to go to. A great restaurant for a rainy day would be Across the Board, a restaurant where you can order great food and then play a wide selection of board games with your friends.
5. Explore a new neighbourhood
Even on rainy days, you can get out of your neighbourhood and explore somewhere new. A fun place to go to, no matter the weather, is Osborne village. There are so many shops along Osborne that you won’t ever be bored. Try a waffle sandwich at Tea Story and head to Music Trader to discover some new tunes. If there’s one thing you can be sure of, it’s that the selection of shops in Osborne Village will not bore you.
6. Visit a festival
You know what they say. “The show must go on.” Even on rainy days. In a Manitoba summer, there’s always a festival everywhere you go. With just a single bus ride you could see an awesome play or improv show, listen to new music you’ve never heard, or participate in all the fun events that happen during festivals. The Fringe Festival, for example, has all sorts of shows. They’re mostly indoors, so staying dry shouldn’t be too difficult.
7. Catch a movie
Don’t let the rain stop you from hanging out with your friends, catch a quick flick to keep yourself entertained instead of being soaked after spending time outside in the rain. Indulge in your inner child; grab a couple tickets and some popcorn to Pixar’s Finding Dory and relax. Who doesn’t love a comfortable, cozy, dark theatre with a heart-warming movie on an inclement day?
8. Jump sky-high at Sky Zone
If you want to burn some of that energy you have from sitting around all day, Sky Zone indoor trampoline park has you covered. Sky zone offers a variety of fitness workouts and sports, including dodge ball, basketball and volleyball. Can you say jumptastic?
9. Uncover beautiful antiques
Remember the days of typewriters? How about ship telegraphs? These items (and many more) can be found and bought in many of Winnipeg’s antique shops. Check out stores like the Johnston Terminal Antique Shop for a divine selection of collectables.
10. Go for a hole-in-one at U-Puttz
One place that’s sure to lift your spirits during a rainy day is U-Puttz Amusement Centre. With black light mini golfing, bumper cars, laser tag, and an arcade, boredom will not strike again. Don’t hesitate to turn your frown upside down – head on down to U-Puttz!
11. Bust a move in the rain
For those of you that like the rain, why not dance like nobody is watching? You can splash, do cartwheels, the running man, the robot, or (my personal favourite) the cha cha slide. Don’t forget to wear a swimsuit!
