Winnipegers are in for a treat!
With the Olympus collection coming from Berlin to the Winnipeg Art Gallery, you can now see Greco-Roman sculptures, art and pottery. This exhibition not only displays art, but also allows leads visitors on a walk through Greek and Roman history. Each piece tells a story of ancient civilization, artists and mythology.
For those of you who love history, you will enjoy following the pre-recorded guides. The artifacts displayed in the exhibit are borrowed from the Altes Museum (Old Museum), the Neues Museum (New Museum), and the Pergamonmuseum (Pergamon Museum) all in Berlin!
The exhibit will only be here until March 6th, 2016. Visit while it’s still here!
Many of the pieces have amazing stories. For instance, this portrait of a lady is not what it seems. In the original, she was actually holding a severed head on a platter. Today, you won’t see that. But, the painter who tried to cover the original couldn’t get the arms quite right – so the lady’s shoulder looks a little wacky. The secret of this painting was discovered in the 1900s by an Xray scan.
